the science behind magnesium and how it has positively impacted my wellbeing. could magnesium be the supplement for you?
Although anxiety and panic attacks are often joked about, they are no laughing matter. Yet, I believe that since mental health has been such a prevalent part of society, it’s natural to use humor to diffuse the situation.
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue in the United States, impacting the lives of 40 million adults—a whopping 18.1% of the population—annually.
Despite this commonality, seeking treatment for anxiety is less frequent than you would think! Only less than 37% of those who deal with anxiety disorders ever receive help for them.
Some of the main causes for those not seeking treatment are due to embarrassment, shame, and not knowing where to get help.
As Western science has come a long way and it’s incredible that there are treatments such as psychotherapy and medications to ease the pain of anxiety, I prefer taking a natural route to treatment to reduce my symptoms of anxiety with the help of the mineral, Magnesium.
What is Magnesium?
The mineral is found in every cell of your body and needs it to function. Magnesium is found in the earth, sea, plants animals and humans. One of its main function is to promote the function of enzymes. Enzymes perform a plethora of reactions in the body, including:
・Nervous system regulation
・Controlling the release of hormones that keep the bones strong and health
How does Magnesium promote wellness?
Constantly suffering from high-stress levels and anxiety? Then magnesium may be the right supplement for you. The mineral is known to relax the body and mind; while, it can improve sleep and mental clarity. If enhancing sleep isn’t enough, magnesium also helps to boost immunity and digestion. So, if you’re convinced to pick yourself up a bottle, maybe grab a roll of toilet paper– or two!
Although Magnesium supports hundreds of chemical reactions in the body, many people get less than what they need.
Magnesium Fights Depression
Magnesium plays a critical role in brain function and mood. Low levels are linked to an increased risk of depression.
Did you know that in periods of stress, Magnesium is used up by the body?
This means that people who use up their Magnesium reserves as a result of their anxiety, thus contributing to more anxiety and more stress.
Although Magnesium is unlikely to cure anxiety in everyone, Magnesium has been effective for many since people are experiencing pronounced anxiety symptoms as a result of the Magnesium deficiency and taking a supplement can improve these levels.
Magnesium for Sleep
Although I love Magnesium since it helps to chill me out and relieves my occasional constipation (maybe this is TMI, but this is a safe place and I feel compelled to always be honest!), Magnesium regulates the hormone melatonin, which guides sleep-wake cycles in the body. Like Ambien (a medication used to help those fall and stay asleep), Magnesium binds to GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors, the neurotransmitter responsible for quieting down nerve activity to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.
The Magnesium Supplement I take:
I love this MAGNESI–OM powder supplement from Moon Juice! I have been taking Magnesium since I was in high-school and it’s totally improved my mood, leveled out my anxiety, regulate my digestive health, and helped me catch some Zzs.
enhances feelings of calm and reduces muscle aches
supports brain function and healthy cognitive aging
supports healthy movements and can alleviate mild bloating
I originally took tablets and another powder by a brand called, Natural Calm, but found the texture to be chalky and the taste to be sharp + did not taste like the flavor (I always chose the Orange one), yet I drank it for years cause it’s what my mom bought from Whole Foods so it was convenient and I was used to it (call me loyal!).
On Melrose Ave, when I used to live in Cali and I do truly miss it, I walked into Moon Juice (after strolling from Glossier) and saw the brand I had admired for years first retail space! I was so excited and browsed the products IRL. I came across the MAGNESI–OM supplement and knew I would love it. Not to mention, I saw Lauren Ireland (co-founder of one of my faves, Summer Fridays) rave about it.
It was love at first sip and I’ve now gone through 2 tubs. I drink in both the AM and PM and it truly tastes so delicious.
In the AM, it can “replace” juice as it tastes like berries and sweetened with monk fruit. It instantly dissolves in water so don’t even try to come up with the “it’ll take too long and Im in a rush excuse!!”
I struggle with constant bloat, especially around ~that time le month~ and I have noticed this has alleviated that heavy, uncomfortable stomach feeling.
Not to mention, this is sugar-free, gluten-free, non-gmo, vegan, and sustainably sourced. Moon Juice is a female owned and founded brand and also offers a variety of health and wellness boosting supplements, vitamins and now skincare!
I love how this is available at Sephora and that Sephora is expanding their wellness and health category! Now, rather than making the trip to Whole Foods, I order my MAGNESI-OM online and with ease.
